Data You Give Us Directly
Search Queries
A query entered in a search tool is transmitted to the outside provider that operates that tool. The provider processes the terms and supplies its results. We do not keep a separate log of the names or places entered into those fields.
Messages and Contact Submissions
When a person sends a direct message, we may retain it long enough to respond and maintain ordinary business records. We do not disclose the message outside our organization unless the sender authorizes it or the law requires disclosure.
Data We Gather Automatically
Standard server and analytics systems can collect technical details when a page loads. Those details may include:
- the device's IP address
- browser type and version
- operating system and device category
- pages viewed and time spent on them
- the referring site, when available
- the date and time of each request
Cookies and Analytics
Cookies are small files that can help measure traffic, site function, and visitor movement between pages. Analytics tools may combine that activity into reports. A browser can reject or remove cookies, although some features may then work differently.
What We Do With This Data
Technical and submitted information may be used for the following limited purposes:
- operating, securing, and improving site performance
- routing a chosen query to the search provider
- understanding which reference pages are useful
- diagnosing errors, abuse, or service failures
- displaying advertising that may reflect visitor interests
No Criminal-Record Data on File
Gilmer County Criminal History does not keep, compile, or sell a database of individual criminal records. It publishes general directions to the Gilmer County Sheriff, local courts, West Virginia State Police Criminal Identification Bureau, WVDCR, and West Virginia Sex Offender Registry. Visitor data is not assembled into a consumer report, and this website is not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
Third-Party Search Partners
Outside companies operate the search boxes shown on some pages. Information submitted there is subject to the provider's own privacy policy, retention schedule, and sharing practices. We do not control those terms. Review the provider's policy before running a query.
Links to Other Websites
Links may lead to Gilmer County offices, West Virginia court portals, agency pages, statutes, or outside search services. Once a visitor leaves this website, the destination's policy controls. Read that policy before providing personal data.
Advertising companies may use their own systems to measure activity across websites or select ads. Their tracking is not operated as part of our server records.
Who Might See Your Data
We do not sell personal information. Limited data may be available to:
- the provider that processes a search query
- analytics and hosting services supporting site operation
- advertising networks that deliver ads
- a court, law-enforcement body, or government office acting under valid legal process
How We Protect Your Data
Reasonable technical and organizational safeguards are used to protect the information under our control. No internet service can guarantee absolute security, so we cannot promise that unauthorized access or loss will never occur.
Users Under 18
This website is intended for adults and does not knowingly collect personal data from people under eighteen. Information known to have been submitted by a minor will be removed when a valid request identifies it.
Your Data Rights
Applicable law may allow a person to request access to personal data we hold, ask that an error be corrected, seek deletion, or object to certain processing. West Virginia's Freedom of Information Act, W. Va. Code §29B-1-3, governs requests for qualifying public records held by government bodies, not private-site visitor data. Public distribution of West Virginia registry information is separately controlled by W. Va. Code §15-12-5.
- request a copy of personal information maintained by us
- ask for an inaccurate item to be corrected
- request deletion where retention is not required
- opt out of processing when applicable law provides that choice
Updates to This Policy
We may revise this policy as services or practices change. A revised version becomes effective when posted here and will carry a new date.
